15.01 - 13.02.2017
In January 2017, ROOM will host the Maputo based artist Felix Mula, as part of its Artist in Residency Programme. The project will entail research into the artist’s family and personal history of labour migration to South Africa. The artist himself, immediate and extended family members were employed in the mining and farming sectors in the country, which formed part of the unrecorded and illegal migrants whose labour supported the country’s economic engine.
For the residency the artist will re-trace physical places and the personal emotions he felt at the time (1994 - 1997), and apply his findings of using memory as part of his practice, to the development of a new body of work.
The artist states:
“I would like to use this chance to play with the memory I have of those years of mine in South Africa, the years of a very first time we met each other, me and South Africa… My first idea is to try to revisit all the places I remember I had been in, and try to understand the emotions I kept of those places and people.”
Felix Mula (b.1979, Maputo) is an artist whose practice focuses on the broad thematics of family, geography, memory, language, post war terrains, using photography and installation based work.
This project is supported by an ANT Funding Grant from Pro Helvetia Johannesburg financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
