PHOTO LENS ENCOUNTERS # 2

20 May 2017

Through a series of encounters the PHOTO LENS project is focused on providing an informal platform for photographers at large to present their previous and ongoing work.

In TALES OF HERE AND LATER the paintings presented occupy a visual vocabulary suspended between fact and fiction while playing with contested forms of desire.

The artist seeks to question the modes and methods of how we visualize genealogies and experienced narratives. In several of the larger scaled oil works, bodies and spaces are at turn obscured, dislocated and fragmented within the painted surface; as a means of contending with the inherent hybridism that occurs between representation and abstraction as both a tool for formal and social critique.

ROOM is pleased to announce the first solo showing of an installation, video based and photographic works by the artist Sikhumbuzo Makandula, under the title UBUZWE (isiXhosa) denoting the concepts of Nation, Nationalism, Nationhood.

Aligned to the artist’s ongoing interest in space and architecture and how these coalesce in the formation of memory, identity and belonging, in UBUZWE, Makandula explores the tension between monumental sites as signifiers of a nation/nationhood and nationalism (built on the back of its colonial and Apartheid legacies) and the possibility of creating a “new ways of being and of identification” (Fouad Asfour, 2016).

USAKOS PHOTOGRAPHS BEYOND RUINS

THE OLD LOCATION ALBUMS 1920s-1960s

Usakos - Photographs Beyond Ruins: The Old Location Albums, 1920s to 1960s is an exhibition that centres on three private collections of historical photographs preserved and curated by four female residents (Cecilie //Geises, Wilhelmine Katjimune, Gisela Pieters and Olga //Garoës) in the small central Namibian town called Usakos. With a view to reflect the resonances of these personal archives, Paul Grendon’s contemporary photographs enter a visual dialogue with the women’s collections, thereby providing a particular opening into the present and future. The exhibition on display at the ROOM Gallery in Johannesburg is a mobile version of an exhibition on permanent display in Usakos.

ORCHESTRATED FREEDOM

An exhibition resulting from ROOM's Artist in Residency Programme of new works by

WASIS.TODAY

Orchestrated Freedom is new cinematic installation by the collective wasis.today.

In this theatrical use of video, photography and sculptural objects, wasis.today challenges manufactured mono-aesthetics and the consent that drives and hybridizes our bodies.

Labor, time and technology are choreographed to each play a role in the engineered conception of modern paradises that hang like ersatz goods for our bodies to chase.

MPHO MOKGADI

IN SITU reflects on the contemporary state of several key architectural structures in Johannesburg’s inner city.

The work presented as part of Mpho Mokgadi's first solo showing at ROOM Gallery & Projects. HERE WE

a project and exhibition by

DOROTHEE KREUTZFELDT

The exhibition included an ongoing re-configuration of the gallery spaces in the form of paintings, installations, walks and incidental events. In the process ROOM became partly inhabited as a studio, with the aim of inviting collaborations and interruptions.

HERE WE is approached as a series of propositions or situations, a way to try and figure how to view, think, and engage with a particular situation or context, with temporality, and the idea of collectivity. Visual recordings of the area surrounding Ellis House, paintings, and other objects will enter and exit as part of the set up within the exhibition space.
