MZWANDILE BUTHELEZI

 

Mzwandile's latest work is inspired by his love for jazz music, through shapes and figures, he explores ideas of Afrikan Spirituality, Mysticism and Identity. Letting the music flow and see where it takes him, finding meaning in the spaces between notes. His drawings are normally spontanious, starting with a circle, using very little if any preliminary drawings he forms visual narratives guided by music and poetry.

 

Mzwandile Buthelezi is a Johannesburg based multi disciplinary artist, born in Soweto in 1981. He graduated in Graphic Design at the University of Johannesburg.

 

Mzwandile began his art career as a graffiti artist in the mid 90’s, He has since moved to making studio work and has taken part in both local and international group exhibitions. His work is inspired by the apartheid era township art styles.

Well known for his striking jazz album cover artworks, he has worked with some of the best Jazz musicians which include Nduduzo Makhathini, Thandi Ntului, Mandla Mlangeni, Shabaka Hutchings, Salim Washington just to name a few. He is also part of a three piece band with fellow band members Tumi Mogorosi and Pule Pheto, in the band Mzwandile creates improvised artworks interpreting the music live. Through his work he explores ideas of African spirituality and politics of identity, drawing from his strong Zulu background.
